Tasting Note

Soalheiro’s ‘Clássico’ is pure Alvarinho at its best – vibrant, expressive and incredibly moreish. Aromas of ripe peach, apricot and zesty citrus jump from the glass, with hints of tropical fruit and white flowers. On the palate it’s crisp and focused, with mouthwatering acidity, a lovely saline touch and a clean, mineral finish that lingers long after the last sip.

Top food pairings:

• Grilled mackerel with lemon and olives (as Kate says!)
• Spaghetti alle vongole or garlicky prawns
• Cheese: creamy goats’ cheese or fresh mozzarella

"It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Albarino. Soalheiro make such a pure and precise wine with this grape. It is vivid and very intense with lipsmacking acidity. I'd enjoy this with grilled mackerel with lemon and olives."

Producer Info

Soalheiro is the name to know when it comes to Alvarinho in Portugal. Based in the far north of the country in Monção and Melgaço, they were the first to bottle Alvarinho as a single-varietal wine back in 1982 – and their ‘Clássico’ remains a benchmark to this day.

Their vineyards lie high up in the hills overlooking the River Minho, protected by surrounding mountains that create a unique microclimate. Warm days and cool nights during ripening lock in freshness and aromatics, giving the wine its trademark balance of ripe fruit and crisp acidity.

Everything here is done with care: hand-picked grapes, gentle pressing, cold fermentation in stainless steel, and ageing on fine lees to bring extra texture and elegance.
